Original Encaustic Wax & Mixed Media Artwork
33cm x 33cm each
One-of-a-kind original artworks by Karen Canning

Artwork Description

Sometimes the best conversations happen without words.

Catch Up #2 captures those fleeting moments of connection, a chance meeting, shared stories, laughter, and the comfort of being in good company. Delicate butterflies drift effortlessly across a luminous encaustic wax surface, gathering in small groups as though pausing to exchange news before continuing their journey.

The soft, minimalist composition creates a sense of calm and spaciousness, allowing each butterfly to become a quiet symbol of friendship, freedom, and meaningful connection. Whether displayed together as a pair or collected individually, these works bring a sense of lightness and serenity to contemporary interiors.

Created using layers of encaustic wax and mixed media, each piece possesses a beautiful depth and subtle luminosity that changes with the light throughout the day. Their neutral palette, accented by vibrant butterfly details, makes them an elegant addition to modern, coastal, Hamptons, Scandinavian, or minimalist-inspired spaces.

For collectors, Catch Up #2 offers more than decoration, they it is a gentle reminder to slow down, reconnect, and appreciate life’s simple moments.

What is Encaustic Wax Painting?

Encaustic painting is an ancient art form that uses natural beeswax mixed with damar resin (a tree sap) and pigments to create beautifully layered, luminous artworks. Each layer of wax is painted on while warm and then fused with heat, giving the surface a gorgeous depth and a soft, tactile quality you can’t get with other mediums.

Every piece is unique, with textures and details that shift and change as the light catches them.

How to Care for Your Encaustic Art

Encaustic wax is surprisingly durable – it’s been around since ancient Egypt, after all!

Your piece won’t melt under normal home conditions, but it’s best to keep it away from direct sunlight, heaters, or extreme heat. Dust it gently with a soft cloth if needed, and over time, you may notice the surface developing a soft, natural sheen – this is perfectly normal and part of the charm of encaustic art.

With just a little love, your artwork will last for generations.
